Margazhi, Art, Learning, &Self-care - Are you wondering what the link is between the title and these words? Read on…
Come margazhi, I am driven to wake up early to enjoy the cool, clear mornings with minimal pollution. I have been attracted towards the Kolams during margazhi since I was 7 years old. Counting the pullies (dots) from one to infinite (as many as you would like to scale the size of the kolam), helped me analytically with pattern recognition, inferences, and innovative problem solving, which in turn made me a passionate mathematics student and later a teacher as well.
What I create every day in the form of a new design of the kolam at my doorstep, is my own imagination. I share my kolams everyday on Instagram/WhatsApp Status with a message that conveys my thoughts & feelings on that morning. Decorating the Kolam with colours / flowers is another exercise that refreshes my thoughts, & feelings, and positively impacts my behaviour for the entire day.
I can go on endlessly about what kolams mean to me. I am sure there are many who have their own stories and reasons behind the month of margazhiand the beautiful kolams that adorn our porches during the span of this entire month. Make your own reasons to relish it and benefit from it as a self-care activity for your own personal wellbeing.
