Statistics on mental health issues in India

The World Health Organization warns that the economic impact of poor mental health in India exceeds $1.03 trillion from 2012 to 2030. In 2022, data indicates that Indian employers are expected to incur approximately 1,100 billion Indian rupees due to poor mental health. Of this total cost, around 510 billion rupees is attributed to employee presenteeism, while absenteeism accounts for 140 billion rupees.

What are the cost implications of poor mental health to organizations?

Various studies on the Cost of Illness (COI) categorize the financial consequences of illness into two types of costs.

Direct costs:

This encompasses healthcare expenses, medical services, treatment, rehabilitation, and related costs

  • Productivity losses resulting from presenteeism
  • Productivity losses resulting from absenteeism
  • Talent loss due to attrition and high recruitment Expenses
  • Poor employee morale and reduced resilience slowing down any organizational changes

Indirect costs:

Tangible costs incurred due to presenteeism such as sickness absence, procedures, policies, and workplace support, and intangible human costs like emotional distress, declining health, lack of focus, and reduced quality of life. These intangible costs are challenging to quantify and are therefore rarely included in COI studies.

What do organizations expect from their workforce?

Organizations expect employees to deliver consistent and superior performance. Any decline or drop in performance will adversely affect the organization’s overall financial performance in terms of profit, margin and EBITDA. The continuous task demands and lack of professional support within an organization's ecosystem will cause huge frustration and distress in employees and that in turn affects their work performance, leading to their disgraceful separation from the organization. The direct consequences mentioned above are just the tip of the iceberg, as the indirect repercussions of an employee's declining mental health will vitiate the Organization’s morale and its culture.
